Community Grocery stores offer affordable food, everyday essentials and practical support to people facing the challenges of rising living costs. Unlike a traditional food bank, our stores provide a welcoming, shop-style experience where members can choose the food they need at a fraction of the cost of a typical supermarket shop. There are no special criteria to meet or proof of need required to access support.
More than just affordable food
Our stores offer a wide selection of food, household products and toiletries, helping members make their budgets go further. Through partnerships with national suppliers and corporate sponsors, we rescue surplus food and make it available at significantly reduced prices.
But Community Grocery is about much more than shopping. We provide a range of wrap-around support to help people build confidence, develop skills and improve their wellbeing. This can include mental health support, money management sessions, healthy cooking classes, job clubs and opportunities to connect with others in the local community.
Each Community Grocery is run by The Message Trust in partnership with a local church, bringing together staff, volunteers and local residents to create a friendly, supportive environment where everyone is welcome.
Helping people and protecting the planet
By redistributing surplus food that might otherwise go to waste, Community Grocery members also help protect the environment. Food may be close to or just past its best-before date, have packaging imperfections or be surplus to supermarket requirements, but it can still be perfectly good to eat.
We believe everyone should have access to affordable food and the opportunity to make more sustainable choices, whatever their budget.
