Step inside The Moot Bar and you’re greeted with warmth, leather Chesterfields, and a vibe that instantly feels like home.
The name “Moot” reflects Alfreton’s medieval past, when gatherings and decisions took place in civic halls. By the time the building became a coaching inn and later a pub, it had shifted from governance to hospitality—but food remained central to its role. Travellers and workers alike would have relied on hearty, filling dishes: simple stews, bread, and ale designed to sustain long journeys or even longer days in nearby collieries.
That legacy carries through …
At the same time, the menu has evolved with modern expectations. Alongside traditional staples, you’ll often find lighter options and contemporary pub favourites, reflecting how the town itself has changed beyond its mining past. Yet the emphasis remains on familiarity and value, keeping the pub accessible to the community it has served for generations.
Eating at the Moot Bar today is, in a small way, a connection to Alfreton’s social history.
Step inside The Moot Bar and you’re greeted with warmth, leather Chesterfields, and a vibe that instantly feels like home. David showed us to our table, and we immediately felt settled for a relaxed afternoon of food and drinks.
The drinks menu is a delight, from lagers by Camden Town and Thornbridge to The Moot Bar’s own crisp Lido Lager. For something non-alcoholic, the orange J20 hit the spot, while the coffee and latte selection tempted us too.
Food here is hearty, well-presented, and served daily from 12–7:30 pm. I went for the Ploughman’s Board—a beautiful spread of pork pie, rustic bread, mature cheddar, Red Leicester, cooked ham salad, pickles, and chutneys—while my friend chose the Pie of the Day: chicken, bacon, and leek in buttery shortcrust, served with mash and mushy peas. Both were stellar, perfectly cooked, and full of flavour.
Cocktail fans are in luck too, with an extensive menu priced £8 each or 2 for £14, and there’s plenty of fun to be had with live music, vinyl nights, and even a Bottomless Brunch featuring 90 minutes of cocktails and a charcuterie board. A sun-soaked outdoor seating area completes the experience.
From comfort food to creative drinks, The Moot Bar is the perfect spot for a relaxed bite with friends—hearty, welcoming, and impossible not to return to.
