CHESTERFIELD MOURNS THE LOSS OF ONE OF ITS LAST GREAT GENTLEMAN SHOPKEEPERS

John Stevenson of John Stevenson Jewellers Dies Suddenly Aged 80

The town of Chesterfield has lost far more than a respected jeweller.

It has lost one of its last true gentleman shopkeepers.

John Stevenson, the much-loved owner and founder of John Stevenson Jewellers on Glumangate, died suddenly on Saturday 9th May 2026, leaving behind not only a hugely successful family business spanning more than 55 years, but also a legacy of warmth, trust, craftsmanship, integrity, and old-fashioned customer care that helped shape the very fabric of Chesterfield town centre itself.

For generations of local families, John Stevenson Jewellers was never simply “a shop”. It was part of life’s most treasured milestones.

Engagement rings. Wedding bands. Anniversary gifts. Retirement watches. Family heirlooms lovingly restored. Precious moments captured forever in gold, platinum, diamonds, and timepieces.

And at the very heart of it all stood John himself – impeccably dressed, quietly dignified, endlessly knowledgeable, and always ready with a warm smile, a story, a joke, or a conversation in the doorway on Glumangate.

Tributes have poured in across social media since news of his passing emerged, with many describing him as “one of the last sincere gentleman shopkeepers”, “an iconic figure in Chesterfield”, and “a man cut from the finest cloth.”

One tribute perhaps captured the mood of the town perfectly:

“It’s going to take some getting used to not seeing John stood in the doorway to chat about all sorts of topics or simply say hello to. He truly understood business, retail, the changes in the town, and most importantly – his customers.”

“An impeccable, trustworthy, old-school businessman. Chaps like John are few and far between.”

Born with a natural eye for people and detail, John’s working life began remarkably early. At just sixteen years of age, he started work as a news photographer with the Derbyshire Times – a role that perhaps helped shape the keen eye, patience, precision, and appreciation for life’s moments that would later define his jewellery career.

From there, he moved into the jewellery trade, working for a jewellers on Stephenson Place in Chesterfield. It was a profession he quickly fell in love with.

Possessing both entrepreneurial vision and an instinctive understanding of people, John eventually took the bold step of setting up independently on Glumangate.

That business would go on to become one of Derbyshire’s most prestigious and trusted family jewellers.

Over more than five decades, the name “John Stevenson Jewellers” became synonymous with quality, distinction, honesty, and service above comparison.

Still proudly family-owned to this day, the business remained deeply personal – something increasingly rare in the modern retail world.

John was supported throughout by his devoted wife Dianne, alongside children Polly and Ben, both of whom worked within the business over the years. Ben continues to lead the company today, carrying forward the family values and principles his father established all those years ago.

Those values were simple, yet profound.

Treat people properly.

Offer quality.

Never compromise trust.

And always remember that jewellery is never “just jewellery.”

As Ben once beautifully explained in an earlier interview:

“A lot of the jewellery business is about trust. Whether you like what we do and whether you trust what we do – I think that’s the most important thing.”

That philosophy became the heartbeat of the business.

Customers did not merely return year after year – they returned generation after generation.

Many local families bought engagement rings there, returned for anniversary gifts, then later brought children and grandchildren through the same doors.

Some entrusted John Stevenson Jewellers with redesigning treasured family heirlooms into contemporary pieces, preserving sentiment while creating something new.

Others simply came because they knew they would be looked after.

In an age increasingly dominated by chain stores, faceless transactions, and online shopping, John represented something enduringly human.

Conversation.

Trust.

Character.

Craftsmanship.

Community.

And perhaps that is why so many people felt such personal affection toward him.

One heartfelt tribute read:

“To know him was a privilege. He was a hard-working man of character, warmth, and quiet dignity, and I will always remember him with respect and affection.”

Another wrote:

“This man pioneered modern Chesterfield’s profile for quality shopping, helping footfall stay in our town.”

There was also great affection for John’s personality and humour.

Back in 2014, writing with typical wit and self-deprecation, John joked:

“My wife informs me that nowadays I must be one of the ‘most mature’ retailers in Chesterfield. This may well be true… however, I take pleasure in reminding her that with age comes wisdom – and with great age, great wisdom!”

Even then, his passion for jewellery, watches, craftsmanship, and customer service remained unmistakable.

Despite gradually stepping back in later years, retirement never truly suited him.

As Ben affectionately remarked in an earlier article:

“He can’t keep away!”

Indeed, many customers would still regularly see John in the shop or standing proudly outside on Glumangate, immaculately turned out as always, chatting warmly with passers-by and loyal customers alike.

That image – John Stevenson standing in the doorway of the business he built – will remain etched into Chesterfield’s memory for many years to come.
