Hello everyone my name is Emma Barker, and I am proud to be a finalist in Miss Derbyshire 2026, with the grand final taking place on 25th July 2026.
For many people, pageantry is about confidence, personal development, and making new connections. While all of those things have been a huge part of my experience, my journey has also given me something incredibly important: a platform to make the invisible visible.
As an autistic woman, I know first-hand that not all disabilities can be seen. Many autistic people face challenges that aren’t immediately obvious to others, from sensory overwhelm and anxiety to difficulties navigating social situations. Because these experiences are often hidden, they can be misunderstood. Through Miss Derbyshire, I hope to raise awareness of autism and hidden disabilities, helping to create greater understanding and acceptance within our communities.

One of the most rewarding parts of this journey has been the confidence I have gained. Taking part has encouraged me to step outside my comfort zone, believe in myself, and embrace the qualities that make me unique. It has shown me that being different is something to be celebrated, not hidden.
What has made this experience truly special, however, has been the incredible support from the public. I have been given opportunities to visit local charities, meet inspiring community groups, and connect with amazing local businesses across Derbyshire. Every conversation, invitation, and act of kindness has helped me grow and has reminded me how supportive and welcoming our community is.
Miss Derbyshire has also given me something I never expected – a genuine sisterhood. I have met so many wonderful women throughout this journey, forming friendships and creating memories that I will treasure for years to come. Although we are competing in the same competition, there is an incredible atmosphere of support, encouragement, and friendship between us all.
As part of my fundraising efforts, I recently completed a 20-mile walk through the Peak District in support of the pageant’s chosen charity, John Eastwood Hospice. It was a challenging but rewarding experience and one that reflected my commitment to supporting a cause that provides such valuable care and support to local families.
My fundraising page will remain open until the week before the final, and I would be incredibly grateful for any support. Donations can be made here:

As I continue this journey towards the final on 25th July, I hope to keep raising awareness, meeting more incredible people, and showing that autism does not have to be a barrier to achieving your goals.

This journey is about far more than a crown. It is about representation, raising awareness, building connections, and helping people understand that not every disability is visible. If sharing my story helps even one person feel seen, understood, or accepted, then every step of this journey will have been worthwhile.
Together, we can make the invisible visible.
